What is FSC?
The Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organisation committed to the promotion of environmentally, socially and economically responsible forest management. FSC was founded in 1993 by a diverse group of environmental institutions, the timber trade, the forestry profession, indigenous peoples´ organisations, community forest groups and forest production certification bodies. FSC enables producers who practice responsible forest management to reach consumers. FSC provides an independent guarantee that the forest is managed according to agreed social, environmental and economic standards.
Today over 60 of our products promote their green FSC credentials. The FSC market continues to expand gaining support from the majority of the major UK retailers and seen increasingly by consumers as both socially and environmentally the right thing to do.
Virtually all T&G´s range of quality utensils are FSC.
T&G´s professional range oiled beech boards are now all FSC, including our legendary ´TV´ boards as used by many of the leading celebrity chefs.
T&G also produce some of the World´s very few FSC mills again made from beech and powered by T&G´s award winning Crushgrind® mechanism.
For the future T&G plan to continue the expansion of its FSC products - THE FUTURES GREEN - THE FUTURES FSC.
Wood – Why It´s So Good
Wood is beautiful, tough, improves with age, and if carefully looked after will last indefinitely. It is the only material in everyday use with a life that is eternal.
Wood is probably man´s oldest natural resource and its history as a household article is as old as time itself. Archaeological excavations have uncovered wooden utensils and bowls dating back thousands of years, which when examined closely resemble many of the basic spoons and tools that we use today.
Wood is a live product, every piece is different and movement can occur with changes of temperature. It is relatively easy to clean, however it can be split, warped, burnt and scarred if not used with care. Wood is not dishwasher proof.
Pine
Most of the T&G range of pine comes from our own factory in Portugal, where we use the rich and wild grain of maritime pine which gives the products their natural rustic charm. Most pieces have been hand made and finished for generations in areas of Europe where the timber is a local commodity and the skills are traditional. All pine darkens with age, turning a rich golden colour.
Because pine is a softwood it is an ideal wood for turning. It takes stain and varnish well and is used mainly in the production of spice and wine racks, mug racks, cruets, kitchen roll holders, and numerous other small kitchen items.
Hevea (Rubberwood)
This is a white tropical hardwood from the rubber tree which is planted mainly for natural rubber production. The major rubber producing countries are Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand which together account for approximately 74% of the total plantation area.
Beech
A northern temperate hardwood from a medium sized tree, averaging 30m high. Beech is a pale cream colour with a straight grain, it is fine textured with small spindle shaped markings. It adapts well to humidity and is ideally suited to the production of kitchen utensils such as spoons, spatulas and rolling pins. In Europe it is the most commonly used timber for the production of food preparation products and kitchen furniture. Today, nearly all the Beechwood products are FSC.
Beechwood can be successfully colour stained for co-ordination, they can also be waxed or oiled to seal the wood enhancing the appearance and prolonging its "working life".
Ash
Ash is a very strong wood both tough and elastic, it is said that the joint of ash will bear more weight than any other wood - it was used for chariots and coach axles and even the framework on the Morris Minor and Mini estates.
Ash has a great history with ancient Gods gathering under its branches. Vikings were named ‘Men of Ash’ and it was also enhanced in ancient times by the belief it was good at repelling evil - even though witches brooms and druid wands were traditionally made of Ash!
Oak
Oak provides an excellent surface for cutting and is both a hard and stable wood. It adapts well to humidity and is ideally suited to use in the kitchen.
Our oak end grain boards create a fascinating kaleidoscope of oak rings and swirl grains creating a real point of difference and are oiled for added care and protection and to prolong their “working life”.
